What are the main differences between fiber vs UV laser engraving

1. Wavelength

Most fiber lasers are in the nm range of the 1064 near-infrared spectrum. Due to its strong absorption, this wavelength is well suited for engraving on metals and some polymers.

Lasers in the UV range (about 355 nm) operate at shorter wavelengths. Compared to fiber lasers, this wavelength has a unique set of interactions with various materials.

2. Material compatibility

This product is ideal for metals, alloys, plastics, ceramics, complex materials, and polished metals. Not suitable for transparent plastics, glass, or organic materials such as wood, which do not readily absorb the wavelength.

UV lasers are compatible with more materials than other lasers, including glass, certain polymers, ceramics, semiconductors, and delicate materials.

Materials that do not absorb infrared light can be easily marked and engraved.

3. Accurate

Fiber lasers are fast and precise, so they can quickly engrave complex patterns. They can mark metal surfaces with high quality and precision, and the ComMarker B4 has a cutting accuracy of 0.01 mm.

UV lasers offer high precision and the ability to create tiny features on a variety of substrates. However, their processing speed can be slightly slower than fiber lasers.

4. Heat Production.

The heat generated by fiber lasers during the engraving process can damage some materials. However, their effect is usually small compared to other types of lasers.

The UV laser engraving process generates less heat than other types of lasers, favoring the engraving of heat-sensitive materials.

5. Cost and maintenance.

Although fiber lasers may be more expensive initially, reduced maintenance costs and higher efficiency make them a better long-term investment.

UV lasers may have greater maintenance costs due to the complexity of handling shorter wavelengths and the requirement for more sensitive optics and components. Their entry price may be higher than fiber lasers.
